What Do We Need To Do Before our Wedding Day?

All marriages in Australia are regulated by the Marriage Act 1963 . We must follow certain rules before, during and after the marriage ceremony.

There are three main points of the legislation we must consider before we conduct the marriage ceremony:

  • The couple must complete a Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) Form at least one month prior to the marriage. This can be done with the Celebrant during an early meeting. The NOIM must be witnessed by a qualified person such as The Celebrant.
  • The Celebrant must see evidence of the date and place of birth of each party and if either or both have been married before, evidence of their divorce or Death Certificate of spouse. The Celebrant is also required to sight some photo Identification for each person, such as a Drivers Licence or Identity Card.
  • Both parties must sign a declaration as to their belief that there is no legal impediment to your marriage.
